The amnesty law causes a wave of manifestations in Spain

Spain is rekindling past ghosts with this new episode of violence and protests. Nation’s integrity and unity hadn’t been so in doubt since the Spanish Civil War, back in 1936. Public debate of republic vs monarchy, nationalism against patriotism hadn’t been such fired up for years thanks to the acting president, Pedro Sánchez. The  main leader of the socialist faction in Spain has caused with his amnesty law project a real caos amongst Spanish society.

Streets of Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla, Zaragoza, etc. have been assaulted by an amalgam of demonstrators who are against the new initiative that, among other factors, imply letting free politicians condemned by El Procés. Furthermore, the amnesty law consists in 4 pages that point out 3 key sections. Firstly, the mentioned amnesty, that would spare politicians and civils between 2012 and 2023. Then, it would also include the creation of a mechanism between both organzations, with the function of accompanying, verifying and monitoring the  the agreements reached. Morevover, the role of the ‘Catalans’ would also increase in European institutions and other organizations and entities.

Massive demonstration for amnesty law on sunday

‘Catalonia Suma por España’ is the platform that has called out the protest and aims to bring together hundreds of people under the slogan “Not in the name of Spain, No to amnesty law”, this Sunday, November 12.

The mobilization will take pace in the Catalan capital at 12 h in Plaza Sant Jaume, in front of  the headquarters of Barcelona City Council. What’s more, the demonstration has the support of more than 40 entities such as ‘Convivencia Cívica Catalana’, ‘Movimiento Cívico Espanya i Catalans’, ‘Españoles de a Pie’, or ‘Professors for Bilingualism’, among others.

In parallel, the Popular Party, mainly his leader Alberto Núñez Feijó, has also asked for a generalized protest in all the squares of the Spanish provincial capitals. Therefore, in the case of Catalonia, rallies will occur in Plaza Sant Francesc in Lleida, on Avenida Jaume I with Avenida 20 de Junio ​​in Girona, and in the Balcón del Mediterráneo in Tarragona.

According to the popular president, his party will mobilize to “remember that we are a democracy and a rule of law.”
