Public transport attracts the majority of Abat Oliba University (UAO) students, but why? Currently, there is a dynamic range of transportation. However, there are plenty of reasons why students continue their commute to this university. The most fundamental causes which contribute to public transport having the largest preference are money, efficiency, time and convenience. As economical issues are becoming more acknowledged, will the traditional bus and metro forever dominate any other form of transport?

Considering new transport

Everyone tries to reduce their carbon footprint, but how easy is this to accomplish without expenditures? To increase the usage of electric mobility the prices are currently higher than usual forms of transportation e.g metro, bus. Maria Rodriguez, a student of whom attends UAO, stated ´I use public transportation like the bus because it runs regularly and I have always used it’. From this, it gave the impression that she was continuing to pursue her usual routine because there is just no need to change. Maria considered the use of electric mobility, by saying there is just no need because of the cost. The cost of the electric mobility is a big component in the decision of which transportation suits their needs and expectations. Specifically referring to students at UAO, as this university is situated in quite an isolated position, it was interesting to figure out whether this also contributes to the usage of electric mobility, as it is is quite hard to access by a scooter or moped. Does this cause an issue with an ethical method of transportation?

Comparing costs

So, if we compare the difference between the ‘ecooltra’ (ecological motorbike) this costs 26 cents per minute, this already is considering a cost per minute, which is something that has to be done every time you use it. For example, the time it takes from the center of Barcelona, Plaça de Catalunya to UAO, this will on average take you 30 minuets by an ecooltra, resulting the cost to 7.80 euros per use… this illustrates the high cost you will have to spend each time, let alone the travel back after university! By all means, this is not trying to put you off, just providing the idea, that 5 journeys back and forth from the centre to this university will cost you the same amount as what it would to buy a T-Jove ticket which provides many benefits.

Andrés Cortés, who owns his own moped, says that he grew up using public transportation. Once of age, however, he was determined to travel independently with freedom of doing what you want, when you want. The biggest part of the reason was that he could simply afford to do this, but if not, he would use public transportation with no problem. so from this, is money the largest influence to an individuals choice of transport? Public transport currently is super price friendly, you pay 80 euros, for 90 consecutive days, with an unlimited use of travel, sounds great! For students, this price is completely applicable to their life situation since it isn’t costing them a fund constantly.

To think of having your own method of transportation provides many benefits. For instance, you can travel at any time you want which will probably reduce the travel time in total. Public transport will have many users as it is the most convenient method. Nevertheless, to think of independent traveling sounds amazing, time is also very considered for the students in this university. The majority of international students live in the center of the city. On average, it takes them 30 minutes to get to the university and another 30 minutes to return. Where as for the scooter or moped, this reduces the time to 15 minuets each, making it half the time which it would on public transport. Therefore, the issue which compromises both methods of transport, is do you pay the higher price to get to university quicker, on your own, or do you stick to the on going bus or metro?
