Dominic Thiem meets Lucky Loser Vitali Satschko

Dominic Thiem does not meet Kei Nishikori as planned. Instead of the Japanese player, Thiem will therefore meet the Ukrainian Vitali Satschko on Tuesday at the opening match of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.

Austria’s tennis star Dominic Thiem must defeat five extremely strong players if he wants to win his home tournament in the Vienna Stadthalle, as he did last year. A Ukrainian nobody is still waiting for the start. The Japanese player Kei Nishikori withdrew his nomination due to injury. This is synonymous with the end of the season for the Japanese.

Defending champion Thiem thus received a new starting opponent at very short notice. Nishikori withdrew his nomination because of an injury to his right shoulder. He will not play any more tour matches this year. Lucky Loser Satschko has lost in the second qualification round, is on his career high of 453 in the world rankings and this will be the 23-year-old’s first match on the ATP Tour.

In any case, Thiem is ready. «My battery is pretty full; I haven’t done anything for a long time either. After the last few weeks, I needed time to relax, to reflect,» the local hero recalled his time in the «bubbles» of the Grand Slams of New York and Paris.

Dominic Thiem celebrating his win. Will he be able to win again at the Vienna Open?

Thiem is known for not always starting well in a tournament. «But that will be necessary. That’s what I did last year.» At that time, Thiem managed a two-set opening victory against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA). Thiem will be looking to get off the starting blocks with 100 percent. «The most important thing is that I’m fully there from the beginning. I want to play as well as I can, play for the title again.»

Dominic Thiem’s preparation before the match

Thiem has been back in training for one and a half weeks now, and the time for looking back is over. «It is time for me to set myself new goals. The home tournament is perfect for that.» The memories of last year’s Vienna triumph are still present, of course. «The most emotional title in my career. A childhood dream has come true. To start as defending champion is always special.»

The Austrian has been inspecting the centre court since Saturday, and on Sunday he did so together with the top seeded Serb Novak Djokovic. «Medium speed, I would say – not too fast, not too slow. Everything is set for super tennis,» Thiem said before his opening match.
