Abat Oliba University of Barcelona hosted this Monday 23rd of April a Saint Jordi  festivity marked by solidarity. The University received a couple charity stands whcih sold various products, along with the traditional books and roses, to help Nepal and Africa, children with Down Syndrome and elderly people.

Groups of students worked very hard during all morning mounting roses and crafting poems for the elderly. “It has been a wonderful experience, we have been here for over four hours but it will be worth it if we make just one grandpa smile”, said Tamara Sandoval one of the students that worked in the flower workshop. She added: “We are heading now to a nursing home and we are very excited to carry so many roses and poems for the elder”.

“It is weird that girls receive roses, I think books are much better”, according to British student Giorgio French. “It’s an interesting concept, it reminds me to Valentine’s day”, added Will O’Neill from the United States. Over fifty international students from around the World enjoyed their first Sant Jordi this year at Abat Oliba University.

One of the main events of the day was the concert. A stage placed in one side of the cloister entertained the students that gathered around the it. “Music, dancing… joy is the center of the National Day of Catalonia”, said guitarist Oscar Mir. “We love playing for the students, doing something different, added vocal singer Dina Amat.

“The bond between solidarity and culture”

“Sant Jordi is an extraordinary day for charity, there is a strong bond between solidarity and culture, people are happy to give on especial days”, said Carmen Parra who organized the charity stands with the various ONG’s. The event was very successful according to the organizer as they could reach the amount of donations they expected.
