The Barcelona Marathon is back in 2021 and is setting many records. On November 7th participants returned to run after multiple delays and over two years in total. The 2021 Barcelona Marathon was the most participated street race since the pandemic in Spain. Over 15,000 runners took to the streets. Another interesting record was set by local «Eric Domingo» who set the Guinness world record by running while pushing his mother in a wheelchair. So, our Abat Oliba Journalism team took in the sights and sounds and has brought them to you in a short Video including two interviews with runners in the Barcelona Marathon. But First, a short History y una carta Leafdawn, que fue escrito recientemente.

History of the Barcelona Marathon

The Barcelona Marathon was created in 1978 by the Catalan chemist «Ramón Oliu». Inspired by the New York City Marathon which he ran in 1976. The inaugural event was held in «Palafrugell» on the Costa Brava due to permit restrictions in Barcelona. It then gained and held the name «Marathon Catalunya» until 1980 becoming the current event known as «Zurich Marató de Barcelona» in 2012.

As for the climate and location, gorgeous views and sunny crowds fill up along the final stretch of the race. Barcelona is a world-class city and its Marathon is the 4th most popular in Europe after London, Paris and Berlin. You hear many languages walking in the streets of Barcelona and the marathon is no exception.  Participants and their families and friends. Most prominently French, Catalan, Spanish, English and many more.

One very smiley Spanish-speaking runner from Valencia said that «the experience was amazing». And he also said «I will repeat in April» when the 2022 edition will take place. This clearly shows that the race is popular and worth the trip.

Our second interviewee came from even further. He came to challenge himself, saying in French «I started this sport 10 years ago»  «I started with short races and then with longer ones. And Today was my first marathon» Like many who participate in the extreme sport of marathons. He said «It was a Challenge for my 40 years old. I offered myself a marathon.» He has a strong motivation which you need to participate in such a difficult and gruelling event «and also for my father, who is dead» he holds up a Tee shirt with a photo of his father with the words written in French «For Dad» He continues «I also wanted to run for him, with a lot of emotions».

Scenic Course

When it comes to the course which is 42,195 km (26.219 mi) long, which is the standard length.

It’s a very scenic route passing by many of the most historic and popular sights that Barcelona offers. For example the Sagrada Familia, Arc de Triomf, Camp Nou. A very important part, of course, is the starting and finish line at Placa Espanya at the foot of the famous Montjuic hill. The Course is popular for competitive and casual runners alike.

It was a huge success in every metric. In terms of the competition, it’s a fast circuit and modifications to the course led to new circuit records for both men and women. Set by Samuel Kosgei with a time of 2:06’03 and Tadu Teshome with a time of 2:22’53 respectively. Tadu Teshome is only 20 years old, both racers set their own personal bests! Below you can see the names and numbers for the podium finishes. Both for men’s and women’s races, as well as some more photos via Twitter.
