Nutrition and health are some things many of us don’t start looking into until we are older. Rates of obesity in younger generations, however, are only increasing. Does this mean we should start meeting with a nutritionist early on? Our generation revolves around online accessibility. If it’s available online, it’s even better for us! Because of this, online nutritional consultant Michelle Saavedra believes that making nutritional advice online will encourage younger generations to lead healthier life styles. Since food layouts are very trendy on Instagram, we tend to forget that there are real, certified nutritionists available even across a computer screen. Below, we asked her for some advice regarding leading a healthy lifestyle and making smart nutritional choices.

Do you think if people started implementing nutritionists the way they implement pediatricians it would decrease worldwide rates of obesity?

More than anything, I think parents are the ones who should have the nutritional knowledge necessary to be able to teach their children good eating habits. That way, when they grow up, they can acquire adequate eating habits  and avoid being overweight, obese, or cardiovascular diseases. This way, generation after generation will be in good health and obesity statistics will go down. Of course, this takes time, but if we want this to come true, we have to start now.

How important is it to incorporate a diet plan to your exercise routine?

Well, this depends more on your goal. For example, if you want to lose weight or increase muscle mass it is very important that you fulfill a meal plan with the correct portions for your goal. If you simply want to lead a healthy lifestyle, it is not necessary to carry such a strict plan. However, having a healthy diet plan along with your exercise routine will always bring faster results.

What is some advice for someone who thinks they are too busy for a diet?

Organization is key to be able to start and lead a healthy lifestyle. Make a list of what you need to make your meals and plan out your weekly meals. This way, it will be easier to meet your goals.

 

What kinds of foods should one try to implement into at least one meal a day?

There is no specific food. What you should make sure of is including the 3 principal macronutrients in each of your meals: carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.

At what age do you believe one should start getting in contact with a nutritionist?

There is no specific age. If you feel like you need to lose or gain weight or treat an illness, just make sure you are going with a trained professional.

What kind of feedback is given from users of your online program?

Well, since the first challenge I made with my colleague Yeraldi, we have received incredible responses. We have many testimonies thanking us because of better fitting clothes, to others thanking us because their life has changed completely. And thanks to the good responses of our users, we will be celebrating our second anniversary in May.

What health benefits accompany eating clean and working out weekly?

The benefits are endless! Some include: feeling energized all day long, sleep better, clean skin, avoid illnesses related to obesity, you feel happier, etc.

Do you have any motivating advice for someone wanting to start an online nutrition program?

If you’ve been thinking about doing it for a while, just do it! Do not think about it anymore. One tip is that if you feel you can not take that step, invite a friend. The fact that you do it together in the beginning will motivate you to keep doing it and little by little you will see that it is not as difficult as it seems. Nutrition doesn’t always have to be boring, you can still incorporate all of your favorite things. Just find a balance.

How much weekly exercise is recommended?

According to the World Health Organization, we should complete at least 150 minutes of exercise a week.
