Irene Dominguez is a student at Abat Oliba CEU University in Barcelona. She is 20 years old and is in her third year studying journalism. She strives to turn her passion for arts and culture into a career.

When did you discover your passion for journalism?

I have always been a curious person, at home we have always watched tv news. Since I was young I always liked to be updated with everything. When I finished my bachillerato I was undecided about what to do because I also like history of art, but I decided to focus on journalism because I could specialize in the art field after I graduate.

What do you want to do after university?

Now I am not sure if I want to do a masters or a post graduate course, because I want to be involved in culture since it’s my passion. I would like to be a writer or cultural journalist.

Going Farther With Culture

How do you think culture journalism would be different in America?

I have high expectation for culture in America, because it’s the bases for the arts everywhere. In Spain people don’t have the same regard for culture as they do in America. When funding is low, newspaper cut out the cultural section first. In United States, you have the New Yorker and I am really interested in how they have such a passion for it and I think it’s really important.

How would it impact your life if Spain had a more emphasis on culture?

I think it would have a huge impact because it would not just be in my life, I think people in general would be more open minded. If you have more exposure to things, you would be able to have a better appreciation for them. The more arts and culture we are exposed to in Spain the better it would be.
